The Beauty of Making Do.

Tonight, it’s finally raining.

After weeks of heat, dry soil, and watching the sky for even the smallest sign of relief, the sound of rain moving through the trees feels like a gift. The garden needed it. The hedges needed it. Honestly, I think we did too.

We’re trying to cook out tonight, though “trying” is probably the key word. Since the hurricane took our covered outdoor area, even something as simple as grilling dinner now involves a little creativity, a close eye on the weather, and occasionally running through the rain while trying to save dinner.

Life has felt a little like that lately.

But there’s also something grounding about continuing anyway. About adapting. About finding beauty in imperfect evenings and unfinished spaces.

Earlier today, I finished drying the Mother’s Day roses I saved for handmade potpourri. I mixed them with lavender flowers and cloves, then added a few warm essential oils before packaging them alongside the soaps I make for open houses and visitors. There’s something deeply satisfying about turning something temporary into something lasting.

Maybe that’s part of what “home” really is.

Not perfection. Not having every project completed or every structure rebuilt after the storm. But continuing to create warmth anyway. Lighting candles anyway. Cooking dinner anyway. Saving rose petals anyway.

The rain is falling outside now, and dinner may or may not survive the weather, but the house smells like roses, lavender, and summer rain — and tonight, that feels like enough.

If this resonates with you, feel free to share.
